OUR MISSION AND HISTORY
Founding and Early Leadership
In 1997, Reverend Reggie Longcrier, a respected community leader, prison chaplain, and pastor, founded Exodus Homes. Recognizing the pressing need for supportive housing and comprehensive services for those facing addiction, homelessness, and reentry challenges, Rev. Longcrier established the organization to provide a structured and nurturing environment for individuals seeking transformation.
Longcrier’s contributions have earned him numerous accolades, such as the Governor’s Award for Volunteer Service, the Hickory Spirit of Martin Luther King Award, and the Key to the City of Hickory. In 2017, the city proclaimed October 18 as “Reverend Reggie Longcrier Day” in his honor.
Today, Rev. Longcrier continues to inspire through public speaking engagements, mentorship, and his unwavering dedication to social justice and community empowerment. His life stands as a powerful testament to the possibility of transformation and the enduring impact of faith and compassion.
Early on, Rev. Susan Smith joined him in this mission, bringing her leadership and relentless dedication to expanding services, advocating for justice, and ensuring that those society often forgets were given a real chance.
Carol Vandergrift, Chief
Financial and Development Officer
Carol Vandergrift joined Exodus Homes in 2018 as a consultant in the accounting department, assisting with audits and strengthening the organization’s financial systems. Her expertise in accounting, strategic planning, and organizational leadership quickly made her an invaluable part
of the team.
In 2024, Carol stepped into executive leadership, first serving as Chief Financial Officer and later as Chief Operating Officer and CFO, overseeing both the financial health and day-to-day operations of the organization. Today, she serves as Chief Financial and Development Officer, leading the organization’s financial strategy, fundraising initiatives, marketing efforts, and longterm sustainability planning.
Carol holds a degree in Accounting and brings a diverse professional background that spans financial management, marketing, entrepreneurship, and business development. Her career includes serving as Chief Financial Officer for a home healthcare organization, consulting for multiple companies and CPA firms, owning a successful printing and marketing business, and building a thriving career in luxury real estate.
With a strong entrepreneurial mindset and deep commitment to the mission, Carol is helping position Exodus Homes for continued growth, expanded community partnerships, and long-term impact as the organization works to restore lives and rebuild hope throughout the region.
Ongoing Mission
Under the leadership of Rev. Longcrier and Carol Vandergrift, Exodus Homes continues its mission to provide supportive housing and services, fostering personal growth and community reintegration for those they serve.
WHY WE EXIST
Exodus Homes exists to break that cycle.
Since 1998, our mission has been to provide safe housing, structure, and opportunity for individuals rebuilding their lives after incarceration, addiction, and homelessness. We believe that real change happens when people are given both accountability and support.
At Exodus Homes, residents find more than a place to stay. They gain access to vocational training through Exodus Works, life-skills development, employment opportunities, recovery support, and a community that believes in second chances.
The impact reaches far beyond the individual. When people stabilize, find employment, and reunite with their families, our entire community becomes stronger and safer. By reducing recidivism and helping individuals achieve long-term recovery and independence, Exodus Homes is transforming lives—one person, one family, and one future at a time. We exist because change is possible—and no one should have to do it alone.
